Event listener activity analysis
A contained sitting that maps how listeners attach, fire, and linger in one application, then writes the findings in language the owning team can use.
- Format
- Sitting, traces, written report, and a walkthrough
- Duration
- Typically two to three weeks for a contained application
- Where
- Melbourne office, on the client floor, or by video
- Fee basis
- From AUD 8,400 for a contained pass; quoted for larger estates
Who this sitting is for
Product and engineering groups who already know the application misbehaves around clicks, scrolls, forms, or route changes, but cannot name which listeners are responsible. It also suits teams about to change a busy surface and wanting a written map before they touch attach points. We work with people who can grant us a reading of the application — not with visitors looking for a screen of their own.
The result
You receive a fire-order map for the surfaces in scope, a list of listeners that attach more than once, a list of listeners that never detach, and a plain-language account of what that activity does to the people using the application. The walkthrough is a conversation, not a slide deck we leave in a folder.
Scope
A contained pass covers one application and the surfaces you name in the brief: for example a public form, an authenticated account area, and the shared layout that wraps them. We read attach and detach, capture and bubble order, handlers that fire on the same event, and activity that continues after the user has left the page. We do not rewrite the application, and we do not stay on as a standing monitor unless you later commission further sittings.
What is included
- A scoping conversation (forty-five minutes, no fee) to name surfaces and constraints.
- A listener inventory for the agreed surfaces.
- A fire-order map showing what runs, and in what sequence, on the events that matter to your brief.
- Notes on leaks, double attaches, and handlers that survive a route change.
- A written report delivered as a dated document.
- One walkthrough with the owning team, in the Melbourne rooms or by video, lasting up to two hours.
What is excluded
Code changes, overnight on-call, and a standing watch on the application after the report is delivered. If you want those, they are a separate conversation and a different fee. We also exclude applications we cannot be shown — a rumour about a listener is not enough.
Who does the work
Rhys Calder leads the sitting. Anika Voss prepares the inventory when the surface count is large. You will know which of us is in the room before the first reading.
How the sitting runs
- Brief and access — you tell us the application, the symptoms, and any traces you already keep.
- First reading — we watch the named surfaces attach and fire, on a build you provide.
- Mapping — we draw the grid of attach points and the order of fire.
- Draft report — you see the findings before the walkthrough, so the conversation is about decisions, not surprises.
- Walkthrough and close — we sit with the team, answer what the map does not say, and close the engagement.
Duration and place
A contained application usually takes two to three weeks from access to walkthrough. Larger estates are quoted. We can sit at Level 7, 84 William Street, Melbourne VIC 3000, on your floor in greater Melbourne, or by video when the traces travel well.
Preparation
Name a counterpart who can operate the application and answer what a screen is for. Provide a build that shows the problem, not only a staging copy that no longer fires the stray handler. If you already have a recording of the failure, send it; it shortens the first day.
Constraints
We do not accept sittings that require us to guess behind a login we cannot use. We pause the clock if access disappears mid-week. Findings are true of the build we were shown; a release the next morning can attach new listeners we have not read.
Fee
A contained pass starts at AUD 8,400. The quote rises with extra surfaces, extra applications, on-site days outside the Melbourne CBD, and a rush that displaces other desks. A deposit of one third confirms the dates. The remainder is due when the report is delivered, before the walkthrough if you prefer to read first.
Next step
Write to the Melbourne desk with the application name, the surfaces that worry you, and a week that could hold a scoping conversation. We answer within two working days.
